Intermediate Materials – Cobalt & Tantalulm

As a full-service supplier to the cemented carbide industry, Global Tungsten & Powders offers a variety of intermediate materials including cobalt, tantalum based powders and nickel sludge.  Cobalt and tantalum (tantalum carbide, tantalum niobium carbide, and niobium carbide) are import components in cemented carbides used in metallcutting applications.  Through our recycling process, GTP can reclaim these materials and return high purity cobalt and tantalum based powders.  We frequently purchase scrap (inserts, drill bits, etc.) on the open market but we also work closely with our customers to process material they have collected.

Cobalt Powder:

Cobalt powder is used in cemented carbides as a binder. Cobalt with high purity, fine particle size and consistent particle size distribution is important because it assures proper distribution of particles which aids in the uniformtiy of liquid-phase sintering and helps to eliminate fine porosity.  The shape of the particles is related to ease of flow so cobalt particles must be small initally or deagglomerate or break up during milling.  Distribution efficiency – consistent particle size distribution – is more important when carbide particles are small and the cobalt content is low.

GTP offers six types of cobalt.

Ultra-Fine:

  • Unwaxed Ultra-Fine
  • Waxed Ultra-Fine – PEG
  • Waxed Ultra-Fine – Paraffin

Extra-Fine:

  • Unwaxed Extra-Fine
  • Waxed Extra-Fine PEG
  • Waxed Extra-Fine - Paraffin

Tantlum Carbide and Tantalum Niobium Carbide:

Tantalum (TaC) and Tantalum Niobium Carbide (TaNbC) are used as an additive to tungsten carbide-cobalt ready-to-press powders.  These powders provide greater chemical stability, increased high-temperature deformation resistance, and grain growth control.  TaC and TaNbC are frequently used in steel cutting grades to maintain edge strength at high temperatures.

GTP offers TaNbC in a wide range of ratios including 90/10, 75/25 and 60/40.  GTP also offers high quality TaC and Niobium Carbide (NbC)
