Metal Powder Technology

For nearly 70 years Global Tungsten & Powders has been engineering tungsten and molybdenum powder solutions as well as intermediate materials such as tantalum and cobalt.  Initially developing metal powders for the lighting industry, GTP turned its expertise to the hard materials segment pioneering processes and production techniques still used today.  We offer a full range of engineered powders for industries including lighting, hard materials, aerospace, energy, electronics, and many others.  With years of experience and manufacturing facilities in the United States and Europe, GTP has the expertise and capacity to meet your requirements.

Tungsten Oxide: GTP manufactures two types of tungsten oxide, blue tungsten oxide and yellow tungsten oxide.  Produced by rotary calcining APT at closely controlled temperatures in a reducing atmosphere, GTP offer two types of blue tungsten oxide with the primary difference being oxygen content.  Blue oxide is primarily used to produce tungsten metal powder for fine tungsten carbide powders and wire.  The second type of tungsten oxide, yellow tungsten oxide, is produced by roasting APT to drive off water and/or ammonia and is used to manufacture coarser WC powders.  GTP can control physical characteristics of our tungsten oxide by varying time and temperature.

Tungsten Powder: Beginning with tungsten ore (wolframite, scheelite, synthetic scheelite, ferberite, hubnerite) or secondary raw materials (hard and soft scrap), GTP produces tungsten powders that provide the purity and particle size uniformity required by manufacturers of metallic tungsten products and cemented tungsten carbide.

Tungsten Carbide: GTP manufactures tungsten carbide powders ranging from 0.7 microns to 40 microns.  Our micrograin carbide grades are used in circuit board drills, fine powders are used to manufacture cutting tools and inserts and our medium and coarse carbide is used to produce drilling tools, wear parts and road construction bits.  Physical and chemical properties of GTP tungsten carbide are carefully controlled to ensure lot to lot performance.

Grade Powders: Tungsten carbide grade powders are free flowing ready to press powders for use as raw materials in the production of cemented carbide tools, wear parts and other precision components.  Each powder particle contains the components of the specified grade, for instance, tungsten carbide, cobalt, and alloy additions plus a wax binder.  Because production of tungsten carbide tools and parts is closely linked to their starting materials, there must be a strong technical link between the powder supplier and the parts fabricator.  GTP has the experience to provide that link.

Thermal Spray Powders: At GTP we manufacture thermal spray powders used around the world by spray shops and original equipment manufacturers (OEM's).  GTP powders are used in numerous applications where temperature and corrosion protection and wear resistance are critical.  Our powders are also used to repair damaged surfaces extending the life of your components.  As a vertically integrated supplier, from ore to final product, Global Tungsten & Powders can control the characteristics of our powder at every step ensuring a high quality product.  On site spray equipment and Research and Development round out GTP's thermal spray capabilities.

Molybdenum Powders: As with many of our products, GTP began producing molybdenum powder for the lighting industry in the early 1940's.  Since then, GTP has continuously refined our production process to optimize the quality of our powder.  We offer two types of moly powder, type 290 commonly used in rod and wire products and type 490 used in forging and rolling or other applications where metalworking capability is required.

Intermediate Materials:  Since the 1970's our tungsten recycling program has provided GTP the opportunity to produce tantalum carbide (TaC and TaNbC) and cobalt powders.  Our cobalt and tantalum based powders are very pure and our quality process ensures a consistent product.
